US medical technology giant Boston Scientific was hit by a cyber attack that caused significant disruption to its global operations.
Boston Scientific develops and manufactures devices and therapies used primarily in cardiology, neurology, oncology and other interventional medical procedures.
The company said it discovered a cybersecurity incident affecting some IT systems on Aug. 25. The attack caused a network outage and disrupted operations.
“The incident impacted access to certain operating systems and business applications, including the ability to process and ship customer orders,” Boston Scientific noted in a statement shared on its website.
The company said it could not provide a timetable for a full recovery of the affected systems.
“The company’s investigation of the cybersecurity incident is ongoing, and the full scope, nature and impacts, including operational and financial impacts, of the incident are not yet known,” Boston Scientific said in SEC Filing on Wednesday.
It is unclear whether the incident also resulted in a data breach. It is not uncommon for breaches that cause significant disruption to involve the theft of personal and other sensitive information.
No known cybercrime group appears to have claimed responsibility for the attack on Boston Scientific.
Security Week has reached out to the company to find out if a ransomware or extortion group is behind the attack and will update this article if they hear back.
