Deliberately generative AI includes zero; no documents are uploaded and all features work offline for data sovereignty.
If you’re looking for an open source alternative to Microsoft 365, you might want to try LibreOffice. The Document Foundation has spent some time uncovering why Microsoft’s strategies are harmful to digital sovereignty, while also teaching people that it does things differently. Now the Document Foundation has released LibreOffice 26.8, which includes a new interface for the notebook pad, a new tool for setting word spacing, and a huge service of absolutely zero AI tools.

There are some really cool tools out there
Further on Block of the document fundteam shows what to expect from LibreOffice 26.8. One of the best features is the new Paragraph Builder, which lets you determine how many spaces a paragraph needs when it breaks on a new line. Instead of looking at each line individually, Paragraph Composer takes the whole paragraph into account to make it look good. In the image above, you can see examples of different word spacing settings; notice how the red underlined text spreads out more the higher the max word spacing setting.
The update also changes how LibreOffice’s ribbon-like user interface, the notebook pad, looks throughout the suite. The bar will now change color depending on which app you are using. The update adds more consistency to the list of styles, and each tab in the notepad has labels that can be scrolled using the mouse wheel or touchpad.
While the above are great features, for some people the most impressive patch note might be what The Document Foundation has to do with it did not happen Add to this update:
No artificial intelligence
LibreOffice 26.8 does not include generative AI features. Documents are not submitted to remote services for processing, and no component of the suite requires network access to operate. This is a deliberate position. Any organization that processes confidential, legally privileged or personal data needs to know where that data goes, and the only guarantee that it will survive an audit is that it never leaves the device.
