Here’s what user GinoWT has been up to on the Steam Machine subreddit. They make good use of the variable steam machine surface to create really smooth looking marble slabs. At GinoWT, their day job involves making marble decorations for superyachts in Carrara, so they have some scraps that can be used to create beautiful looking accessories.
They also use their superyacht design know-how to create a marble stick for a steam engine. Each plate is 5-6mm thick and uses magnets built into the 3D printed structure to attach it to the console itself. The end result may not be as practical as an e-ink display (you can make one yourself if you want), but it looks great.
Right now they have three versions: Sahara Noir (black with gold lines inside), Roman Travertine (with small dimples inside), and the most interesting, Statuario. GinoWT says that their Statuario is the same marble used by Michelangelo, which is fortunate. not means To make this plate they took a piece of David.
