Cronos blockchain relaunches after $74 million Tectonic exploit

The Cronos blockchain network has resumed trading activity after a price manipulation attack on cryptocurrency lending platform Tectonic allowed an attacker to borrow $74 million.

Accordingly current informationThe threat actor artificially inflated the price of Tectonic’s TONIC token by 100-fold and then used it as collateral to borrow real-world assets. The price manipulation occurred within 20 minutes.

Despite the massive amount the exploit generated, the attacker only managed to steal about $6 million worth of Ethereum, with the rest of the funds “stuck” on Cronos, says blockchain security and data analytics firm PeckShield.

Cronos is an Ethereum-like blockchain network connected to Crypto.com, while Tectonic is a decentralized finance (DeFi) lending app running on Cronos.

Tectonic, Cronos’ largest lending protocol before the incident at $122 million, allows users to deposit cryptocurrencies and borrow against assets they provide as collateral.

After the incident, the total value was blocked according to DeFiLlama is almost 3 million US dollars.

Yesterday, Tectonics announced that it was investigating an incident and advised users not to interact with the protocol until the platform publicly confirmed it was safe to do so.

Cronos responded quickly to the detected exploit and the operation of the blockchain stopped, Freeze all transactions currently in progress.

Cronos relaunched the network today, informing users that it is “producing blocks again and is fully back online.”

“This was an emergency measure between validator and consensus to protect users from an exploit of the Tectonic protocol.” Cronus explains.

“The chain state has been restored prior to this morning’s tectonic exploit. Cronos has resumed producing blocks since 08/30/2026 at 23:49:01 UTC, starting with block 90,896,189.”

The blockchain is currently being closely monitored for stability, protocol compatibility and other issues.

The platform also announced that it would provide more details about the exploit in a postmortem report to be released soon.
