Google is making your Android phone a safer place for your digital identity

ID cards may be out soon. From driver’s licenses to ID cards, we have more ID on our phones, and Google wants to make sure the transition is secure.. The company has just announced expanding its hardware security program to make digital IDs on Android phones more reliable.

What changes?

Google is renaming and expanding its Android Ready SE program to the Android Digital Credential Alliance. The original program, launched back in 2021, brought together chipmakers to build a secure hardware foundation for digital credentials for Android devices. The new alliance takes it a step further by bringing government agencies, phone makers and wallet developers into one room, so your digital ID works everywhere and meets strict security standards.

How will your phone keep the ID secure?

Google’s setup is based on the so-called chain of trust. It starts at the hardware level, where Strongbox runs inside a dedicated secure chip that physically isolates your credentials from the rest of the phone, almost like a vault within a vault. We only share your ID if you unlock it with your face, fingerprint or PIN, so no one can take your permission without your permission.

The same security system already powers Google Wallet and serves as a reference model for the European Digital Identity Wallet, which is being rolled out in many countries.

What does this mean to you?

If you live in the US or elsewhere where digital IDs are supported, this means more phones can access the same bank-level security that flagship phones already enjoy. It also takes some pressure off governments and companies building digital ID systems, since the security basics are already built into Android.

We’re still a few years away from ditching our physical wallets entirely, but updates like this one bring us one step closer.
