Tim Cook is stepping down as Apple’s longtime CEO and senior executives are heading for his exit.
On Monday, Bloomberg Reportedly Phil Schiller, head of Apple’s long-time App Store, has resigned from his position in the past few days. Schiller was with the company Since 1987, with only four years off during that time. He took over the App Store in 2015.
However, Schiller will not leave the company altogether. He will continue as an Apple Fellow, a role reserved for those who have made outstanding technical or leadership contributions to the company. In that role, he will work on an unspecified project, though Bloomberg noted that company insiders believe Schiller’s role is “a big step toward an executive who will eventually step down.”
Schiller raised the company through a lawsuit related to Epic Games over the App Store’s in-app fee system. Epic filed an antitrust lawsuit in 2020, claiming that Apple had created an illegal monopoly. The monopoly claims were eventually dismissed, and judges in most cases ruled in Apple’s favor. However, the company was also ordered to ensure that app developers can connect to external payment options. The legal battle is still ongoing.
While Schiller agreed, Apple plans to hand over the day-to-day operations of the App Store to Carson Oliver, who has been with Apple for more than 14 years and has worked in the entire App Store division during that time. The App Store is also being changed from the marketing department to the service department, which is headed by Eddy Cue, Bloomberg writes. TechCrunch reached out to Apple for more information about the transition.
Schiller’s departure follows other high-profile departures for the iPhone maker. The company recently lost its CEO Jeff Williams, who retired In December after 27 years with the company. Yes Lisa Jackson’s retirementVice President for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, was also announced in December, as well. General Counsel Kate Adams. Jennifer Bailey, longtime head of Apple Pay, is scheduled to retire In October after more than 20 years with the company.
In June, Apple also lost Paul Meade, Apple’s vice president in charge of Vision Pro headphones, who left the company to join OpenAI. In the absence of Meade, Apple has reduced the Vision Pro team, which lost about 100 employees two weeks ago.
As John Ternus takes over as CEO, he will be tasked with reinstating Apple with a new generation of corporate leaders — among other tasks facing the new chief executive.
