Changing the Apple Watch Series 12 display may disappoint upgraders

The Apple Watch Series 12’s narrower screen brings back the Series 9-era compromise with the bezel, pairing a smaller display with a larger case than the Series 10 and Series 11.

This reduction is most apparent on the 46mm model: the display area drops to 1,196 square millimeters, a 2% decrease from the 1,220 square millimeters listed for the 10 and 11 series, even if Apple keeps the 416 x 496 pixel resolution.

The 42mm version follows the same pattern: the display area drops from 989 square millimeters to 970 square millimeters, a decrease of 1.9%, while the 374 x 446 pixel count remains unchanged from the previous two generations.

As screens shrink, the cases around them grow: the 46mm case widens from 46 x 39 x 9.7mm on the Series 10 and Series 11 to 46 x 40 x 9.7mm on the Series 12, a roughly 2.6% increase in footprint.

The 42mm case grows by a similar amount, expanding from 42 x 36 millimeters to 42 x 37 millimeters, about 2.8%, while its depth remains at 9.7 millimeters in both sizes.

The combination of a smaller screen and a wider body pushes the visible bezel outward, and Apple has recessed the bezel while widening the front glass on the 12 Series, making those bezels appear even more pronounced.

Design change with precedent

There’s precedent for this kind of compromise, as the Series 10 took a similar step when it replaced the Series 9 in 2024, widening the body for the display inside, setting the template that the Series 11 and now the Series 12 are following.

The visible aluminum edge of the Series 10 has actually shrunk by around 33% compared to the Series 9, yet the overall bezel, which includes the black glass bezel, has grown by roughly 17%, although the case and display specs alone suggest an improvement.

Apple hasn’t detailed how the recessed casing and extended glass will feel in everyday use, so early impressions will depend on hands-on testing once the Series 12 lands on wrists around the world.
