TL; DR

  • Waymo has added Gemini integration to its Ojai self-driving cars.
  • Passengers can ask Gemini for information, recommendations or tow a car.
  • It also offers a new three-screen UI with features like ‘Zen Mode’.

Self-driving cars can be great, especially for introverts who don’t want to talk to anyone in a taxi, and Waymo is one of the biggest companies offering self-driving cabs in the US. Now the company is trying to improve the passenger experience with a useful new feature: Gemini integration.

The company has announced he eventually brings Gemini to his machines. Passengers can now use Gemini to control things like music or cabin temperature. They can also ask Gemini for recommendations about the neighborhood they’re going through or get more information about a monument or building along their route. In addition, they can ask Gemini to tow the car. However, Gemini cannot control any aspect of a vehicle’s movement or direction, nor does it have access to real-time driving data.

Waymo’s Ojai vehicles also come with a new user interface. Ojai cars use three displays: a central infotainment screen and screens in front of each passenger seat. The screens will be individually controllable, placing useful controls in front of the passenger without mirroring them across all displays.

Thus, the passenger in the right rear seat sees detailed controls on his screen, while the other two displays show a simplified trip status or a view of the surrounding media player.

New Ojai vehicles come with features like “Zen Mode” that dims the passenger’s screen and displays minimal trip information so you can relax without distractions.
