Motorola could be working on an iPhone Ultra-like foldable device

Motorola may be the latest phone maker to jump on the wide-folding trend: leaked sketches point to a new book-like device that looks like it’ll open up into a wider, more tablet-like screen.

The sketches, spotted by Android Headlines, are said to be from an anonymous source and show a folding that follows the general design of other wide folding designs. There is no word yet on its exact dimensions, but the general shape is clear: a traditional-looking phone that can be expanded horizontally into a wider display.

The drawings also have some interesting details. It appears that the rear panel has a horizontal camera module with two lenses, a flash or an additional sensor. The layout resembles the camera bar used on some Pixel phones and can help prevent the phone from landing on a flat surface.

Motorola also seems to be paying attention to how it feels when opening the phone. The sides have rounded edges to give users a more curved surface, while the schematics refer to the design as “Easy Open Profile.” It seems like a small detail, but anything that makes it easier to open the big folding can be useful in everyday use.

Inside, there’s a punch-hole camera cutout, while the display is visible without any visible creases. However, the last aspect should be treated with caution. A sketch may hint at an anti-crease screen, but it doesn’t reveal how well Motorola has actually managed to hide the drive in a finished device.

Motorola’s potential move into wide-folding products has gained momentum. Samsung has already entered the category with the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Huawei with the Pura X Max, and Apple is rumored to be working on a wider iPhone Ultra with a foldable design.

According to Android Headlines, Motorola’s device could arrive “in the coming months,” though there’s no specific release date yet. No name, price, or hardware specs have been confirmed either.

So for now, this is more of an early release than a confirmed product. But if Motorola is indeed making a foldable design, these sketches suggest that the company is at least thinking beyond the usual tall, narrow, foldable format.
