3 Overlooked TV Shows on Prime Video You Should Watch This Weekend (August 14-16)

Prime Video’s library goes far beyond the algorithm-driven hits that everyone already knows about. This week I dug up some older, quieter gems, from the chaotic world of a New York band to a burned-out lawyer bringing down corporate giants to a slice-of-life comedy that deserves a much longer run. Whether you’re looking for something dramatic, funny or deeply human, these Prime Video titles are worth adding to your watchlist this weekend.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best free movies, and the best movies on Amazon Prime Video.

Mozart in the Jungle (2014-2018)

Genre: Comedy, drama, music
IMDb: 8.1/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 95%

This Prime TV series takes you behind the scenes of New York’s classical music world to reveal the chaos behind the scenes. Hailey Rutledge (Lola Kirke), a talented young oboist chasing her big break, finds herself in the shoes of Rodrigo (Gael García Bernal), a flamboyant and unpredictable conductor who shakes up the town’s heritage orchestra. Together they navigate ego clashes, wild parties and financial stress.

Writing removes all the demands around orchestra rooms. My favorite aspect is the way the show captures the undisturbed hustle and bustle of low-paid musicians in pursuit of artistic perfection. Gael García Bernal captivates in this performance, playing Rodrigo with a passion that brings every scene to life. Lola Kirke is the emotional center of the show, playing Hailey’s ambitions and self-doubt with real honesty. Its half-hour episodes fly by, making it so easy to binge in one sitting.

Goliath (2016-2021)

Genre: Legal drama, crime
IMDb: 8.2/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 86%

Billy McBride (Billy Bob Thornton), once the influential co-founder of a large law firm, became an alcoholic after a case he won ended in tragedy. When he reluctantly files a wrongful death lawsuit against the company he built, a much larger and deadlier conspiracy begins to surface around him. The series changes the central case and villain every season, keeping the format fresh with four separate stories in each series. Beneath the courtroom battles, this Prime TV series is really about redemption, addiction, and what it costs you to finally fight for something again.

The story moves quickly, but the real draw is a burned-out underdog fighting corporate monsters. I dedicate this to the role of Billy Bob Thornton, which he carries with such charm that every trial victory is well-deserved. Meanwhile, William Hurt is a cold, calculating menace as Billy’s former partner and rival. The show isn’t afraid to get really weird in its later seasons, leaning into surreal, almost noir-like sequences that some viewers loved and others found disturbing.

As We See It (2022)

Genre: comedy, drama
IMDb: 8.1/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 90%

Jack (Rick Glassman), Harrison (Albert Rutecki), and Violet (Sue Ann Pien), three twentysomething roommates who are all on the autism spectrum, navigate jobs, friendships, and romance with the help of their behavioral assistant, Mandy. Based on the Israeli series On the Spectrum created by Jason Katims, the show features the central trio of real personalities, flaws and contradictions rather than reducing them to lessons about autism.

What sets this series apart is the brilliant casting of neurodivergent actors in the lead roles, giving each performance an authenticity rarely seen on television. As a result, they bring their unfiltered reality to the comedic timing, which makes the show even more enjoyable. I was very disappointed when the show was canceled after one season despite strong reviews. Still, its eight episodes are totally worth watching.
