Earlier this month, Google revealed Its new Pixel 11 lineup. The phones themselves are very similar compared to the previous Pixel 10 line, although they offer slightly better quality of life. One of them is a new set of camera processing options – allowing you to have more control over how your photos will look.
Regarding the release of the iPhone 18 Pro, I hope Apple offers something similar to this.
Pixel 11 Added a new camera feature called The camera looks. It’s similar to the photo mode on the iPhone, where you can adjust how the camera captures the image. These corrections happen before capture, so it’s more than just a filter.
Google has many default preset options similar to Apple’s, and they let you customize each preset. In addition, there are a few other options that capture the latest trends in mobile photography: Editorial, Velvet, Classic, Digi, Black Tie, and Minimal.
These features stray from the highly processed smartphone photos, and try to capture the essence of the old photos. Digi, as the name suggests, enters the low dynamic range, contrast, and noise of smaller, wearable cameras from the 2010s.
On the other hand, very little, into the supply of low processing. Many HDR pipes do not work, and you only get what you expect if the smartphone sensor shows you what it captured. You can see some Preview image over on 9to5Google.
With ProRAW on iPhone, it’s definitely possible to get your iPhone photos back to a state where it looks like it didn’t go through too many processing steps. Kind of defeats the point of the smartphone image, though.
Wrap up
If Apple wants to create the best camera in your pocket, it needs to accept that not all users want the same thing. The photo format is a good first step, but the company should go further. At the end of the day, photography is an art of self-expression, so giving users more options on how to process their photos would be a great step forward. Apple should take a page out of Google’s playbook, and add a ‘Minimal’ style to the iPhone.
How do you feel about the current state of iPhone photography? Are you a fan of Apple’s latest design implementation, or do you want more? Let us know in the comments.
