TL; DR
- Google launches Gmail program that gives qualified political committees an easy way out of regular spam filtering.
- Gmail’s Verified Sender program launches on September 8 — less than two months before the 2026 US midterm elections.
- Entrants must meet verification and security requirements and maintain a spam rate below 0.3%.
If you need more help filling your inbox with political fundraising requests, Google is making it easier for qualified campaigns and committees to bypass Gmail’s regular spam filtering. The new program arrives just in time for the final period before the 2026 midterm review.
As noticed The New York TimesGoogle announced a new Gmail is a verified sender program It starts on September 8. Qualified candidates, political parties, PACs, and other political committees can avoid Gmail’s regular spam filtering if they meet Google’s requirements.
These requirements include sending from a verified domain, meeting Google’s authentication and security standards, and keeping the percentage of messages marked as spam by Gmail users below 0.3% of the 14-day average. Google may suspend or remove non-compliant senders, at which point their emails will be bounced through the normal filtering system.
Reported to Google NOW This program is designed to connect people with the emails they want, while keeping users in control of their inboxes. Gmail users can still mark messages as spam, block senders and unsubscribe, so the verified status doesn’t give complete freedom to campaigns.
The changes also come after Republican complaints that Gmail’s spam filter affected their political fundraising emails more negatively than Democratic messages. The Republican National Committee sued Google over the issue, but the case was later dropped, and the Federal Election Commission also dismissed a related complaint.
Anyone tired of election season email is unlikely to be pleased by the timing. The program will go live less than two months before the Nov. 3 election, giving campaigns plenty of time to ramp up their fundraising appeals in the final stages.
