In recent years, Apple has only added more customization to iOS. First, we got all the lock screen customizations with iOS 16. That’s icon painting in iOS 18, clear icons in iOS 26, and the full Liquid Glass slider in iOS 27.
The iPhone has become more personal over time, and that’s a great thing. Since we can already paint our icons on our home screen – why not extend that to the rest of the operating system?
iOS 27 hasn’t been released to the public yet, so maybe I’m a little ahead of myself for thinking about what Apple can do for the next iteration of the software. However, I feel that making a thematic app theme on top of light and dark mode would be the logical next step.
I am asking for a model of Mr. material In iOS, except instead of a wallpaper, it will be a color-based icon – although Apple may offer an option for matching the wallpaper. Last year Apple introduced the option to have your icon match the color of the MagSafe case you are using, which can also tie in well with this color theme.
Note: Apple introduced color themes in Xcode, their IDE for building Apple software, earlier this year at WWDC. There are so many great looking options out there – why not bring that level of excitement to the iPhone? Even the Mac, as it stands today, allows you to set system-wide tint colors for third-party apps.
Wrap up
All in all, I just think that coloring in iOS would look great, and would be another step in the direction of allowing more customization.
