Samsung’s newest foldable flagships may feel like incredible engineering marvels, but beneath that polished exterior lies a familiar, depressing story. We’ve been impressed with Samsung’s new foldable form factor on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, but new snippets from iFixit remind us that ultra-thin foldables still come with major repairable differences.
iFixit The Galaxy Z Fold 8 was given a provisional repairability score of 4/10, hampered by a very fragile internal screen, a complex hinge and a dust-resistance rating that’s not suitable for real-life use.
According to iFixit, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 scores a few points for using standard Phillips/JIS screws and incorporating a modular USB-C port that isn’t soldered directly to the motherboard. It also uses new silicon-carbon battery technology, which offers an 8.8% increase in capacity over the Fold 7, and pairs those cells with Samsung’s incredibly attractive jacket removal system. However, the folding battery contains two of these batteries, and access to one requires removing the delicate outer display, risking an expensive component to service only a consumable part.
If the internal display or hinge needs to be serviced, the real horror begins. During iFixit’s teardown, the plastic frame around the inner screen chipped and broke, eventually destroying the delicate foldable OLED.
Additionally, the IP4X rating does not protect against pocket lint or small debris. When exposed to dirt and sand during microscopic testing, the hinge started to sound like “chewing gravel,” which is what you can hear at the 5:40 mark in YouTuber JerryRigEverything’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 durability test video.
Since Samsung usually combines the internal screen and hinge into one replaceable assembly, servicing may require cleaning the entire device, making a DIY fix practically impossible. iFixit also notes that official replacement parts for last year’s Fold 7 remain scarce, and that doesn’t help the Fold 8 parts forecast. If you’re buying the Fold 8 with the intention of keeping it for several years, you may want to base your repair expectations on it.
