Resume

  • The latest patch KB5002914 for Windows 11 does not silently perform copy-paste in Excel 2016-2024.

  • Microsoft is investigating; paste does not show an error and there is currently no workaround.

  • There is no temporary fix yet; Try LibreOffice Calc until Microsoft fixes it.

Another Patch Tuesday has come and gone, so you know what that means: more weird Windows 11 bugs. We saw a recent patch break of WSL and Claude Cowork functionality due to issues with Plan9. Now, Microsoft has confirmed that anyone who downloaded the latest update may have a copy-paste issue in Excel.

What’s worse is that it won’t tell you what happened

As noticed NeovinMicrosoft has confirmed a new bug for Excel in the September patch description KB5002914. As it turns out, if you’re trying to copy-paste data in Excel and it doesn’t seem to work despite making sure you’ve done everything right, it’s not just you:

In Microsoft Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016, the paste operation may not be performed silently. Although users try to paste content, the source remains selected and the destination is not changed. When this problem occurs, users will not receive an indication of the failure, such as a beep or an error message. Microsoft is investigating this issue and will post more information in this article as it becomes available.

The good news is that this is the only known bug in Excel introduced by KB5002914. The bad news is that this is a very annoying bug and there’s nothing we can do to temporarily fix it while Microsoft works on a patch. I guess we’ll just have to sit back and wait for Microsoft to release a patch. On the other hand, this might be a great reason to try LibreOffice Calc.
